Marcello Giordani Young Artist Program 2014: June 15 – July 28 



The Marcello Giordani Young Artist Program provides gifted young singers, pianists, and stage directors (ages 18-30) opportunities to study and perform with leading opera professionals during a 6-week residency at the Crested Butte Music Festival. 

Marcello Giordani Young Artists receive housing as well as a $500 stipend. All Young Artists will be considered for The Crested Butte Music Festival Award for Excellence in memory of Rosalind Jackson of $1,000, which will be announced at the final performance of Verdi’s Rigoletto on July 27, 2014.

Audition Material:

• Headshot and resume
• Audio tape of 2 arias in contrasting styles and languages
• If called for a live audition, prepare 3 additional arias in contrasting styles and languages
• Intensive instruction in musical and dramatic work, diction, and stagecraft
• Perform and cover roles in Verdi’s Rigoletto and Puccini’s Suor Angelica
• Perform in a cover run of Verdi’s Rigoletto with orchestra
• Perform in an aria and ensemble concert with orchestra
• Perform in fully-staged opera scenes program, public master classes, and community/donor events
• Physical training sessions three times a week with Keith Miller, Metropolitan Opera
• Dance instruction with Linda Gelinas, Metropolitan Opera
• Outdoor experiences with Wilderness Pursuits, a guided program offered by Western State Colorado University in rafting, kayaking, and other outdoor sports

Apprentice Coach 

Audition Material:

• Audio file of two arias in contrasting styles and languages, to be both sung and played

• Two letters of recommendation

• Write a brief statement outlining your experience and interest in the program

If called for a live audition, prepare the four selections listed below. Applicants will be asked to play and sing selections with idiomatic
language as well as good pianism.  The audition will also include sight-reading and an interview.  

• La bohème: Beginning of opera through Schaunard’s aria (end at Benoit’s “Si può?”)
• Rigoletto: “Act III: Tempesta” (Orchestral portion only, from end of terzetto through end of the scene)
• Ariadne auf Naxos: “Sein wir wieder gut”
• Le nozze di Figaro: Recitativo proceeding “Voi che sapete”: “”Quando duolmi, Susanna…”

• Coach and perform in opera scenes program
• Coach and prepare Young Artists for cover roles in Verdi’s Rigoletto and Puccini’s Suor Angelica
• Play staging rehearsals for operas, scenes, and dramatic coachings
• Coach Young Artists in additional scenes, arias and roles as necessary• Perform in master classes and community/donor events
• Receive musical and pianistic instruction from YAP faculty

Interview Material:
• Headshot, resume and brief biography
• Two letters of recommendation
• Write a brief statement outlining your experience and interest in the program 

Candidates will be interviewed in December 2013 - in NYC or by phone.
• Assist the professional directing staff in the production of Verdi's Rigoletto and Puccini's Suor Angelica
• Assist in all technical and organizational aspects of production as needed
• Assist in the preparation of additional scenes and community/donor events
• Attend dance, drama and master classes with the other Young Artists
